Things to do

Our position on The Wall makes us the perfect place to stop for a rest day, there’s so much to do why not make it a couple of days or a long weekend?  And, come the Summer, we hope to have our own transport so we can collect you at the end of a your activities or a day’s walking when one foot just won’t go in front of the other anymore.

Activities from Twice Brewed Inn, Hadrians Wall, Northumberland

Hadrian’s Wall is one of the most magnificent and well preserved Roman Frontiers with each mile steeped in history, myths, fables and wonder.  As such, there is something to suit all members of the family within close reach of The Inn.  Vindolanda, Housesteads, The Roman Army Museum at Wall Town, The Temple of Mithras, Chesters Roman Fort and Cawfields Roman Wall and Milecastle to name just a few.  We even have our own very own Twice Brewed Temporary Marching Camp within the boundary of the Inn displayed by a series of earthworks and buried ditches.

We would be more than happy to organise outings on your behalf ranging from a couple of hours away to a full day, please speak to Reception for further details and tips on planning the perfect excursion.

As one of Britain’s most cherished activities, it comes as no surprise that The Twice Brewed Inn is a popular spot to stop for a rest, some refreshment and a bite to eat along the 84 miles of the Hadrian’s Wall Path National Trail, one of the most iconic walks of the British Isles.  If you need us to organise any element of your trip to, or activities on The Wall, including baggage collection and drop off, please feel free to contact us.  The popular Pennine Way also passed the Inn as it meanders from Greenhead to Wark.

Hadrians Cycleway (Route 72) passes very close to The Inn; the Route is 174 miles long and follows the Roman Frontiers and the Cumbrian Coastline and offers a spectacular, if challenging, experience.  The recently devised Sandstone Way also passes close to us and through the village of Newbrough.

We can organise bike hire for you should you wish to venture out for a day or two, using The Twice Brewed as your base so please feel free to ask a member of staff for more details.

We work with a number of recommended Tour Guides who can tailor routes and content to suit your personal preferences and abilities.  Whether you’re into flora and fauna, mysteries and battles of the Roman Armies or you simply want to meander along the Wall we have the perfect activities for you, just ask at reception or contact Kevin Robson or Paul Tait (who we consider to be two of the best guides around) directly.

We can also arrange collection and drop-off of your bags along the way and by the Summer, we hope to have our own transport facilities to enable us to collect you at the end of a day’s walking activities and then drop you back off in the morning once you have been revitalised with a good nights sleep and a hearty Northumbrian breakfast.

We have a number of sporting opportunities and activities local to us and should you be staying with us for a few days and fancy a morning on the golf course, a peaceful days fishing on the Tyne or a few hours in Hexham exploring the shops, the Abbey and everything else the town has to offer then please contact us to organise this on your behalf allowing you to sit back and relax in our beautiful surroundings.

We also plan to host some Stargazing events in the near future, we will keep the website updated with times and dates.

There are some fabulous places for bird watchers within a stones throw of the Inn; Beamwham, Crag Lough and Greenlee Lough to name a few.  Regular sitings include oyster catchers, larks, curlews, plovers, teal, mallard, grouse and a lucky few may also spot one of our beautiful native red squirrels.

Don’t forget, if walking and cycling are not for you the AD122 Hadrian’s Wall Country Bus is an excellent way to explore all The Wall has to offer.  The service runs from 25th March – 25th September and stops just a short distance from The Inn.
